Chapter Eleven
Scarlett
To make sure she was safe, Adam had told Derinda to extend her stay in San Francisco. She’d been pissed to hell and back, her exact words, but she’d eventually agreed. This meant Christy took Tuck on the days Derinda would have had him, something he loved because she made cookies and cupcakes with him. The first time she did it, I’d almost passed out when Adam had sent me a photo of her kitchen covered in chocolate chips and flour where Tuck had gotten carried away.
What had calmed down and made the photos special were the laughing faces of Christy and Tuck, covered in flour and chocolate. I would have been upset, dreading the cleanup, but Christy acted like it was the best thing in the world. The following day, she’d invited Kali and Dewi round too, and I’d gotten to see the aftermath first hand when I’d collected my brother. Now I could see why the mess Tuck made hadn’t been an issue. Holy shit, it had even on the ceiling – in the living room.
I’d been kept up to date by the police working on Mavis’s case, and so far the cause of death had been the rope around her neck. She’d had enough heroin in her system to knock her out, but the strangulation had been the key factor leading to her death. I’d told Derinda we’d wait for her to come home before we organized a small funeral, out of respect, so her body was being kept by the coroner until we could arrange for it to be transported to us from Chicago. Sheriff Bell suggested delaying it until things settled down so that’s what we were doing.
Tony and Lars were loving being parents and had both taken parental leave from work to spend time with Pandora and Shea. They’d obviously been inundated with gifts by the families, and the last time I went to their house to drop off two little swimsuits for the girls, I’d been amused by the amount of toys spread out around the place. It wasn’t messy by any stretch, but it looked like a toy shop had exploded in their living room. And it was all thanks to Adam.
My new and more relaxed approach to life was also thanks to Adam.
The confidence and happiness that radiated from Tuck were all thanks to Adam.
The women and children that were sleeping safely at home instead of being abused were all thanks to Adam.
Almost like I’d conjured him, the bell over the front of the shop door tinkled, and in walked the man himself. I had a constant team of security around the perimeter of the business, and before I went into the building, they’d do a walkthrough and make sure that no one was hiding. I wouldn’t say I felt one hundred percent safe, but I definitely felt safer than I had before.
“Hey, baby!”
“Hey, handsome,” I murmured, watching his eyes crinkle as he got closer.
He’d been working on a couple of missing person cases which were weighing heavily on him because there were no leads.
